Liberal politician Andrew Laming claimed last week in parliament that the debate on Afghanistan and pulling the troops out "is being driven by a Socialist Alliance agenda"! (see parliamentary Hansard report here). Yet, after 9 years of war, tens of thousands of Afghan civilians and more than 2000 US-led troops killed (including 21 Australians), and billions of dollars being spent on the Afghan occupation - the parliamentary so-called debate is a farce. Both major parties agree with keeping troops in Afghanistan for at least another ten years! When the the Greens Adam Bandt and former intelligence analyst Andrew Wilkie put forward anti-war positions that reflect the will of the Australian people, TV cameras panned back to show that the gutless ALP and Coalition politicians had left the chamber empty.
